about

On April 7th, 2015, Josh Garrels released the full-length album entitled Home. About the album Garrels states, “While writing these songs I was searching for joy, and this pursuit instinctively brought my attention back to the people and places closest to me. Because of this, these songs have less of an outward, expansive scope, and rather turn the attention inward, to the intimacy of family, forgiveness, and homecoming.”

Home features 11 new songs from Josh Garrels, produced in his fan-funded home studio, which sits in his backyard in Portland, OR. While Garrels has traditionally done much of his own production, Home relies more heavily on his collaboration with Brooklyn’s Mason Jar Music, Eric Earley of Blitzen Trapper, and David Wilton of A Boy & His Kite. While Home retains Garrels' eclectic influences in folk music, symphonic orchestration, and sample-based sequencing, the dominant sound of soul music is what sets this album apart from his previous work.

Track Name: Born Again
I came into the world, into the wild
No place for a child
Used my voice to howl
With the ghouls of night
In the dying light

Had to learn to get what I need
In the dark, empty
Instincts are guiding me
Like a beast to some blood
And I can’t get enough

I’m losing control; my body, my soul
Are slowly fading away
But I’m ready now
To feel the power of change

I’m my mother’s child
I’m my father’s son
It took me awhile
But my time has come
To be born again

Running scared in between what I hate
And what I need
Savior and enemy are both trying
To take my soul
And I can’t hide no more

Stumble out to the light
Raise my fist up to fight
Then I catch your eye
So full of love
Lord, what have I done?

I cry at your feet, wounded for me
And all of the monsters and men
But here in your light
We can begin again

I’m my mother’s child
I’m my father’s son
It took me a while
But my time has come
To be born again
Track Name: Colors
Lift up your shoulders child
Breathe in
Carry the weight of love
You’ve been given
Storm is passing by
Light breaks in
As you learn to sing

Every color can
Be unwound
Woven into a wave
Of beautiful sound
Open the heavenlies and
Shake the ground
And change the world

So let all the creatures sing
Praises over everything
Colors are meant to bring
Glory to the light

Voices might fade away
And begin
Become a tapestry
We all are in
No one will ever be
Forgotten
There’s a place for us

So let all the creatures sing
Praises over everything
Colors are meant to bring
Glory to the light
Glory to the throne

This is our story
This is our song
We’re telling it slowly all life long
Of a Savior and what He’s done
It’s a mystery
Track Name: A Long Way
There’s a time in our lives
To return, sacrifice
Wild grass has grown high
On the path between our lives
There’s a light in the trees
It’s closer now, I’m on my knees
Oh Father, forgive me, please

I came a long, long way back home
To see you one more time
‘Cause I came a long, long way back home
To see you and say Goodbye

Father’s hands work the ground
Turns the soil, lays it down
Everything done and said
Lives beyond the quick and the dead
Heritage passed along
To the sons like a blessed song
So raise your voices on high tonight

We came a long, long way back home
To see you one more time
‘Cause we came a long, long way back home
To see you and say Goodbye
To hold you and say Goodbye, Goodbye
Track Name: Leviathan
All my love, all I’ve done
Falls apart, is undone
Built a tower; You tore it down

I am weak; You are strong
Who can tame Leviathan?
Mouth of Sheol sings a lonely song

Yahweh gives and takes away
Will you curse or bless the name?
Trial tests us like the flame
Track Name: The Arrow
An arrow is stuck between my ribs
And I pray to God, Don’t let it end like this
I fought like a man with will to live
But I was betrayed by the man within

How on earth did it all go down like this?
I’ve got no words to make sense of it
My shield, my fight for righteousness
Could not protect me from myself

I’m looking for the higher power
To be my mighty tower
Save me from myself, Oh yeah
But I’m-a fall seven more times
And it ain’t nobody’s fault except mine
There’s only one way out

Please, Lord, forgive me
I’m down on my bended knees
And I need your love
Mercy is your medicine
Help me turn around again
To You, my friend

How long did I fool myself
Believing I, I didn’t need nobody’s help
A fool trusts in his power and his wealth
Until he’s brought down low
Unto a shadow of himself

The arrow was sent to intervene
It pierced my bones and shook me from my dream
Lord You know exactly what I need
Wounds from a friend, severe mercy

I’m looking for the higher power
To be my mighty tower
Save me from myself, Oh yeah
But I’m-a fall seven more times
And it ain’t nobody’s fault except mine
There’s only one way out

Please, Lord, forgive me
I’m down on my bended knees
And I need your love
Mercy is your medicine
Help me turn around again
To You, my friend
Track Name: Heavens Knife
Take my hand
I won’t let go
We’ve waited so long

And all my life
I walked alone
To you, my heart, my home

Like the first man
I was cut so deep by heaven’s knife
When I awoke from my sleep
Oh my Lord, she’s beautiful
She’s a part of me
She’s my wife

Bound by love
One flesh to be
An unbroken ring

And I lay down
My life for thee
In this we are free

Like the first man
I was cut so deep by heaven’s knife
When I awoke from my sleep
Oh my Lord, she’ s beautiful
Walking up to me
Oh she’s wonderful, standing next to me
Oh she’s all
All that I can see, yeah
She’s beautiful, she’s a part of me
She’s my wife
Track Name: Morning Light
There’s a place, a garden for the young
To laugh and dance in safety among
The shimmering light in the garden of peace

But steal a bite and paradise is lost
With darkened hearts we didn’t count the cost
Forgot all we left behind

Life picks up speed before you know
We’re holding on for dear life, Oh Lord
We’re too proud to turn back now

One day it all falls down
It breaks our heart and it breaks our crown
Brings us down where we see

It’s gonna be alright
Turn around and let back in the light
And joy will come
Like a bird in the morning sun
And all will be made well
Once again

There’s a way that seems right to a man
Until he’s in over head and he don’t understand
How the plans he made only led him astray

But every good gift comes down from above
From the Lord of light like a labor of love
Upon the child who waits for Him

Sometimes you’ll find what you’re waiting for
Was there all along just waiting for you
To turn around and reconcile

And it may be broken down
All the bridges burned like an old ghost town
But this my son can be made new

It’s gonna be alright
Shake it out and let back in the light
And joy will come
Like a bird in the morning sun
And all will be made well
And all will be made well
And all will be made well
Once again
Track Name: Always Be
And I will always be
And I will sing for thee
All my life
All my love
Day and night
All the way home
Track Name: Home At Last
Who is there at the end of lonesome roads?
All of us hope there’s a home

A place to rest where wounds get dressed, the table’s full
The sound of laughter in the halls

Light the fire, gather ‘round
Join together, sing it loud
Raise the glass and joyful be
Home at last, one family

We’re all orphans looking for an open door
Hard times come no more

Come on up to the house of the Lord
Father adopts us all
Track Name: At The Table
I went the ways of wayward winds
In a world of trouble and sin
Walked a long and crooked mile
Behind a million rank and file
Forgot where I came from
Somewhere back when I was young
I was a good man’s child

‘Cause I lost some nameless things
My innocence flew away from me
She had to hide her face from my desire
To embrace forbidden fire
But at night I dream
She’s singing over me
Oh, oh, my child

Come on home, home to me
And I will hold you in my arms
And joyful be

There will always, always be
A place for you at my table
Return to me

Wondering where I might begin
Hear a voice upon the wind
She’s singing faint but singing true
Son, there ain’t nothing you can do
But listen close and follow me
I’ll take you where you’re meant to be
Just don’t lose faith

So I put my hand upon the plow
Wipe the sweat up from my brow
Plant the good seed along the way
As I look forward to the day
When at last I see
My Father run to me
Singing oh, my child

Come on home, home to me
And I will hold you in my arms
And joyful be

There will always, always be
A place for you at my table
Return to me
My child
Track Name: Benediction
May all of your days shine brightly
And your nights blessed with peace
Wherever you lay down to sleep

And all things are made good
For those who believe
May you grow from a seed
Into a strong, fruitful tree

As the days unfold
Hold your breath to see
Life is a mystery

And joy, it is severe
When the way is rough and steep
But love will make your days complete

And may the work of your hands help those in need
Befriend the lonely, serve the weak
And forgive enemies

And if you find true love, one day marry
Bear a child from your seed
Help it to grow into a tree

As the days unfold
Hold your breathe to see
Life is a mystery

And joy, it is severe
When the way is rough and steep
Love will make your days complete
